Rakim, known as one of the first lyrical MCs, gave such a story and imagery through his words on this track about a young thug/drug dealer who was forced to be what he is based on his surrounds. It fit perfect wit the film like 2 puzzles fitting together. Rakim's storytelling ability was definitely shown in this track. Today's Pick Of The Day comes from Black Hippy's own Black Lip Pastor, Ab-Soul, for his cut "ILLuminate" off of his 2012 iTunes released album Control System. Ab-Soul made a name for himself with this 2011 mixtape Longterm Mentality and then came back in 2012 with Control System
and really showed how great of an MC he is, possibly the wisest cat out of the 4. "ILLuminate" is one of those tracks you hear and your eyes get wide because of his arrogant rap on the track. He spits about how amazing of an MC he is("I feel like I can run circles round Jay-Z...") and how he will be a legend in Hip Hop in the future. Fellow Black Hippy member Kendrick Lamar, which has the last verse, comes in and unleashes his wrath on his cut with a flame of bars speaking on the how everyone is expecting so much of him since he has stepped into the mainstream spotlight. There is no question that Soul and K.Dot are the strongest MCs in the Black Hippy collective...based on this song that is. Now....this week's NE Recap is for the short film that changed the game; "Runaway" by Kanye West. With "Runaway", Kanye did something no Hip Hop artist had done before. Kanye was playing when he said "The rapper compared to Michael (Jackson)...", being that it's inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller and Prince's Purple Rain Runaway is a love story between a man and half women-half phoenix. Also, it was a way Ye could preview songs from his 4th album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The film starts model Selita Ebanks as the half women-half phoenix and Kanye as Griffin. It's definitely good to look back on this film and appreciate what I did for Hip Hop. If you haven't seen this, something has to be done. All you have to do is play right above.

Way Back Wednesday: "Kick Push" - Lupe Fiasco

This week's WBW cut comes from Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco for his 2006 debut track "Kick Push". "Kick Push" was released and that opened the door for upcoming MC who really spit on real topics (conscience rap). Hearing the lyrics of the song takes you on a trip of a young cat just trying to come up in the world. This was the first single off Lupe's debut album Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor, which is claimed to be Lupe's best project. Even listening to this hit now, takes you back to 2006. Lupe is still at it these days, releasing 3 other albums (The Cool, Lasers, F&L2) and becoming a DJ as well. This cut definitely up Lupe on and it won't be forgotten.
