Hip-Hop in The Grammy's
kotzendes-einhorn |
Hip-Hop has evolved into an international language of creative expression.
Hip-Hop is more than music; it is a lifestyle.
But even as hip-hop grows every second of the day, some still don't consider it as music.
Hip-hop has been unnoticed from the Grammy's for years to the point where hip-hop mogul, Jay-Z, boycotted the Grammy's.
"I am boycotting the Grammy's because too many major rap artists continue to be overlooked. Rappers deserve more attention from the Grammy committee and from the whole world," said Jay-Z.
Pop Sugar |
In 1989, the Best Rap Performance category was presented but it wasn't aired instead announced the winners prior to the telecast.
This year, hip-hop has hit a milestone marking the third time that two hip-hop albums are nominated for Album of the Year.
The hip-hop community is expanding and will continue expand within the Grammy's ceremony.
Despite the controversy with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis being labeled as hip-hop, do not be discouraged.
Hip-hop is not dead. Hip-hop has resurrected.

#WBW Pt.2: "Definition" - Black Star [Mos Def & Talib Kweli]
Part 2 of this week's #WBW comes from a New York group that should have released another album by now but they have taken their respected paths in music & life...Black Star [Mos Def & Talib Kweli]. The track "Definition" by the Hip Hop duo comes off of their first and only self titled album Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star in 1998. "Definition" is definitely one of those feel good tracks of the late 90's. It has an island feel to it but still gives you that boom bap beat, which is signature for New York MCs. Not to mention, it's a track with a message. Mos & Talib feed off of each other to bring a message of what Hip Hop was displaying and how it was affecting other in that time period. I just wish they would have dropped more albums as Black Star. Either way, they both became successful as individuals. "Definition" contains 3 samples from Boogie Down Productions: "Remix For P IS Free", "Stop The Violence" & "The Bridge Is Over". Way to cut up samples huh? Even with only one album, Black Star will remain as one of the dopest Hip Hop duo to do it.

#WBW Pt.1: "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous" - Big L
For this week's 2 part #WayBackWednesday, we got part 1 from one of our street team members Jocelyn. When I listened to it, it dawned on me how dope but real this track is. Not to mention, this MC doesn't get much credit for his talent. Part 1 of this week's is "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous" by the late Harlem MC Big L. Big L is almost like a myth in Hip Hop culture because he passed away at such a young age but he made an great impact on Hip Hop while he we here for his short time. The title track "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous", released in 1995, takes you on a trip of what life is like in the slums of Harlem and we what can happen. Big L gives us such imagery and metaphors to go with the dark boom bap instrumental. Tracks like this made it ok for MCs to rap about the poverty-driven inner city and gangsta shit. It's sad that he died in the same streets he was rapping about in this track. Big L was inspiration to artists like Jay-Z, Mac Miller and many more. "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous" contains samples of "You're As Right As Rain" by Bob James and "Children R the Future" by Big Daddy Kane. You can check out part 1 of this week's #WBW right above, tell Joc thank you for this one.
