Hip-hop Children's book

Author, Laban Carrick Hill and illustrator, Theodore Taylor III created When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip-Hop, a children's book.

The book details the bibliography on the beginnings of hip-hop and the life of DJ Kool Herc, the originator of hip-hop.

The children's book illustrator, Mr. Taylor, was awarded the Corretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award by the American Library Association for the artwork.

Mr. Taylor's artwork shows young Clive Campbell's transformation into DJ Kool Herc who helped launch hip-hop in the early 70s.
